Sapphire Gymnasts Sparkle at the County Championships

Sunday 1st October saw many competitive gymnasts from across the county meet at Marriott’s Gymnastics Club in Stevenage for the Hertfordshire Championships. With 23 gymnasts wearing blue sparkly leotards representing Sapphire Gymnastics, based at the Hemel Hempstead Sportspace Centre. Starting the morning off saw the level 4 gymnasts aged from 9 to 14 plus compete. In the age 9 category Sadie Mckenna took the trophy with a huge score of 47.85, which just pipped Zara Simpson who finished on 47.30. Taking the overall bronze with Simone Stoyanov, with Phoebe Fletcher and Gracie Rae Kilby who came 4th and 5th with some impressive apparatus ribbons to their name. Leah Kennedy was the age 10 champion with Lilianne Jervis Allen finishing up in 3rd position overall, which was just a few marks ahead of a great performance from Alexa McDiarmid. Leah and Lilianne have both qualified for the Regional Finales for the Age 10 competition to be held later in the month. Moving up to the age 12’s, Tegan Hodson Little took the top spot with a score of 43.95 meaning she has qualified for the regional finals in her age group. Not far behind was Iona Waddell, Nadia Nowakowska and Lucie Polivka Manning, who all put in strong individual performances.

After lunch saw the turn of the Level 3, 2 and FIG levelled gymnasts. Starting with Amy Price and Kenzie Brown who took the silver and bronze medals in the Level 3 age 11 competition. Both girls have qualified for their regional finals later in the months thanks to their clinical routines. At level 2 age 11 Phoebe Boyton took the gold with 3 apparatus 1st place ribbons too. Level 2 age 12/13 trophy went to Liliana Moring with an impressive score of 46.65. Following in behind was Sasha Cherry and Charlotte Anderson Priddie, both girls put out some big skills and impressive routines.

Sapphires Elite gymnasts who compete at FIG level gymnastics had another dominant performance at the championships. Ondine Achampong took the top spot with the highest score of the day at 49.35 in the Espior age group. England Squad member Alyieana Rahim took the junior age trophy, coming top on all 4 apparatus. Alyieana is now looking to build on her success for her first international competition in Germany later this month. Strong performances from Tilly Hedges, Laruen Matthews and Gipsy Squires rounded off a very successful day for the club.
