Bring on the British!

The British Challenge Cup is a competition organised into Espoir,  Junior and Senior sections as per the full British Championships. The competition gives gymnasts who have not passed compulsory grade 2 the chance to, firstly, compete in a national event judged on full FIG code, but also the chance to qualify for the British Championships. Each year a score is set and gymnasts achieving that score in any of the divisions are able to move up to the British Championships the following year. This makes the Challenge cup a fiercely contested event with a lot on offer for aspiring gymnasts.

Liliana Moring and Sasha Cherry, both 13, of Sapphire School of Gymnastics were looking to reach the pass mark of 45.00 in the Espoir levels. Liliana Moring took the silver medal on beam with a huge score of 12.4 and managed to surpass the required overall score and has qualified for the British Espoirs later this year. Liliana will now face some of the top gymnasts in the country, including those that make up part of the national squad structure. Sasha Cherry put in consistent performances across Vault, Beam and Floor but just fell short of the overall qualifying score.

Tilly Hedges, representing Sapphire at the competition in the Junior section, who was trying to build on a strong Hertfordshire County performance from the previous weekend. Requiring an overall score of 46.00 to qualify for next years British Championships, Tilly came in nail bitingly close with 45.8. Coming in at 15th with over 60 gymnasts competing it was a strong performance with many positives to take. Tilly also placed 6th on floor, an impressive feat helped by her huge double pike somersault to start the exercise.

Liliana Moring, looking forward to the British Espoir Championships will be joined by Sapphire’s Ondine Achampong who had already qualified for the event.
