British Champion!

The Espoir British championships is one of the biggest dates on the calendar for gymnasts, coaches and fans. It’s where the emerging talent for the future takes to the big stage to showcase their potential. This competition is for the top twelve and thirteen year old gymnasts in the country, for this year’s competition, gymnasts born in 2004 and 2005 were eligible.

Huge congratulations to Champion Ondine Achampong of Sapphire, a beautiful gymnast, and deserving champion at any time, who put out clean and clinical routines to take the top spot. She came first on both beam and floor and showed both elegance and grace in her performances, mixed with powerful tumbling and dynamic leaps, jumps and spins. She then came 2nd on bars also with a beautifully executed routine leaving no doubt that she would come out on top overall.

Day two of the British Espoir Championships saw the top eight on each piece from the all around competition return for apparatus finals.

Ondine Achampong took silver again on bars, not as high on difficulty as others, but with the highest level of precision.

The beam title went to Ondine too, so clean and light in her work with good range and extension through her leaps and with fast snappy tumbling. Ondine worked with poise and confidence, for the most part keeping her routine flowing which is so important under the strict beam requirements.

Finally onto floor, and Ondine took her third title of the Championships. She worked beautifully with fluidity, graceful dance, classy choreography, soft and light throughout, styled to suit her perfectly. The tumbles were high and clean, she twists like lightning, and seems very aerially aware and so lands well. The leaps show her impressive range, long clean lines which look so good when extended, she creates time in the air by working fully through her foot on takeoff to give her the lift she needs.

We are all looking forward to 2018, when Ondine will be part of the Great Britain National squad again.
